Jump Start Program

Jump Start is a health and nutrition class for 6th graders at Scottsburg Middle School.

Due to lack of funding, SMS closed their Family and Consumer Science program in 2011.  The closing fueled the creation of Jump Start. The purpose of the program is to try to fill the void and provide health education for middle school students. The curriculum was developed free of cost by Katherine Gasiorowski, who has a Master’s in Public Health. The class is designed so that it can be facilitated by volunteers. In the past, retired teachers, college students, AIDS and other community members have made up most of our volunteers.  Ali Blanton, Scott County Partnership employee, coordinates Jump Start and recruits volunteer.  Jump Start consists of ten lessons  including, Introduction to MyPlate, Serving Sizes, Cooking Skills, Farm to Table, International Foods, Menu Planning, Fast Food and Advertising and Nutrition Labels.

Jump Start 2015 begins on April 13!
